There has been an up rise in Online work scams at freelancing websites
Nowadays, scammers have become more sophisticated in their methods. Some individuals are targeting the Upwork website by posting job ads related to data entry work or file conversion from image to Word. They specifically prey on vulnerable individuals who are willing to take on such jobs.
Initially, they engage in manipulative tactics by asking for personal information such as name, age, email address, hometown, and qualifications. Once they have gained the person’s trust, they offer them the job with a tight deadline of one or two days.
After the individual completes and submits the project, the scammers transfer the conversation to their account department. Here is where the main scam begins. The account department representative asks the person to transfer $100 in order to process their payment and transfer it to their bank account.
If the person pays the $100, their information is passed on to another individual in the finance department, who claims that in order to activate the account, an additional payment of $200 is required. If the person pays this amount as well, they are told that their account is now activated. However, when they attempt to transfer their money from the account, the payment fails.
At this point, the scammers demand a certificate of transfer (COT) which costs $350, claiming that this amount is refundable. They insist that the person pays this fee as well. Unfortunately, once the person transfers the money, the scammers vanish, taking all of the person’s funds.
Therefore, it is essential not to trust any work offers related to Upwork outside of the official website. Additionally, it is crucial to exercise caution and refrain from engaging in such suspicious activities, especially on platforms like Telegram.
